A visit to Granada wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the hammam. Hammams are one of the countless ways to feel the Moorish influence here in Southern Spain. Whether it be the stunning Alhambra tour you booked in advance, hours spent at the countless teterías (Moorish tea shops) on Calle Elvira or while relaxing in a hammam. You’re bound to absolutely adore the Moorish influence here in Granada.
what is a hammam?

A hammam is a bathhouse that utilizes different temperatures baths, steam and cold plunges to detox, relax and increase circulation. Hammams have been around for over 1,000 years and the Moors brought this style of bath house to Southern Spain.
Hammams can vary in sizes, apparel requirements and services. However, the ultimate goal is to leave feeling better than you felt when you arrived. Some cultures even view this as a religious or civic practice. They were originally used to promote hygiene practices before homes had their own private plumbing.
The Hammam Al andalus atmosphere

The Hammam Al Andalus feels like going to the spa in a museum. The architecture, designs and lighting are out of this world. Each room is full of candles, unique tile work and gorgeous intricate designs.
During your time you can alternate between drinking sweet mint tea and cool water to help regulate your temperature. One of the rooms has a cool plunge that you can relax in after soaking in a hotter pool. The entire area playing relaxing traditional music of the are allowing you to fully feel immersed in the experience.

Things to note about the hammam

This package includes either a 15 or 30 minute massage. When booking make sure to select the proper booking section that offers the massage time amount you’d like. The masseuse will come find you and your partner or group and you’ll be serviced at the same time. I personally loved that the masseuse allowed me to select a massage oil scented with local aromas – I chose the orange blossom scent.
*It is required that you wear a swimsuit, and are barefoot while in the facility. If nudity was a concern as it can be traditional in certain other bath houses around the world – no need to fret.*
Another important note about the experience is that it is not separated by gender. Some bathhouses in different parts of the world have separate sections for women and men, but this is a communal bath. Making it a wonderful experience for couples and families.
One important note is that unless booked separately there is no scrubbing portion during this experience. In other Hammams or bath houses there can be a sloughing of the top layer of your skin to remove dead skin. Whether that makes you relieved or not, you can book the service or rest assured that it isn’t part of your experience.
