Step aside Aperol Spritz, there’s a new cocktail in town! After many years of the Campari vs. Aperol Spritz debate, the Hugo Spritz is here to reign supreme. This Mediterranean Hugo Spritz recipe is tried and true and ready to be shared with you!
Isn’t the Hugo Spritz originally from Northern Italy? Yes! After sipping a Hugo Spritz, or two or three, in a few countries this recipe has taken many different shapes. I figued it would only be fair to name this recipe after the Mediterranean region as a whole. It has changed brands, quantities, garnishes all around, but this recipe is the one I’ve perfected.
What’s not to love about a refreshing, light and elegant cocktail? Each of the core flavors – elderflower, lime and mint – are subtle and pair perfectly with the gentle bubbles of Prosecco and sparkling water.
This Hugo Spritz recipe is great to sip in the hot summer sun or lounging at the beaches in Montenegro. I would argue that the mint and elderflower combination paired with the celebratory bubbles of Prosecco makes it perfect for winter holiday celebrations.
Side note: This recipe is also very adaptable and forgiving! If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, add more of the elderflower liqueur. If you like your cocktails a bit stronger, you can omit the sparkling water, and top with more Prosecco.
Pro tip: The most common elderflower liqueur brand in the US is St. Germain. I personally have found that the cocktail tastes better when made with other brands of elderflower liqueur. My absolute favorite is one that I had in Croatia. Luckily, the liqueur is sold internationally! Roner’s Holler Sambo Elderflower Liqueur.
Mediterranean Hugo Spritz
Ingredients
- 1 oz. Elderflower Liqueur (Preferably not St. Germain)
- 4 oz. Dry Prosecco
- 2 oz. Sparkling Water (Not Club Soda)
- 3-4 Fresh Mint Leaves
- 1-3 Lime Slices
Instructions
- Fill your glass of choice with ice (I prefer a wine glass)
- Gather your clean mint leaves and place them on one of your hands, slapping them once with the other hand (This allows the essential oils in the leaves to release and add more flavor to your cocktail)
- Pour the elderflower liqueur over the ice and mint leaves
- Add the Prosecco and top with sparkling water
- Add your lime slices for a garnish
- Give it a slight swirl with a cocktail spoon
- Enjoy Immediately!
