Would you believe me if I told you the best gelato I’ve ever had wasn’t in Italy?
Tucked in one of the many winding alleys of Split, is the magnificent Gelateria Emiliana.
They’re open from 9:00 AM until midnight everyday, which can satisfy your hankering for delicious gelato nearly whenever. Luckily, they’re located only a 2-minute walking distance from Diocletian’s palace. This makes their gelato the perfect after dinner treat to enjoy alongside some live music.
Their complex flavors make it difficult to choose, especially since they don’t offer samples, but it’s practically impossible to go wrong.
Flavors like Croatian fig and ricotta, mamma che buono (chocolate hazelnut), lemon and lavender and pistachio leave you bound to find a unique flavor that leaves you nostalgic of your time in Split.
My personal favorite was the cheesecake flavor, which was incredibly rich and tangy. Not only were their flavors incredibly distinct, but the texture was unlike any gelato I’ve ever indulged in.
The manner in which each gelato is churned leaves makes for a unique consistency. Its almost stretchy, yet still as dense and creamy as you’d want a gelato to be. No watery or icy texture here!
Each morning they make their homemade waffle cones for the day. During this trip I was traveling with my best friend who has celiac disease. We were both incredibly excited to learn that they make their gluten free cones first to avoid contamination.
If you make your way to Split, Croatia you definitely should make a stop, or two, at Gelateria Emiliana.
